- Catarina Barata is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (University of Lisbon), Portugal. - She is also a Research Fellow at Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR), where she conducts research on explainable machine learning approaches applied to (medical) image analysis and Human-AI Collaboration. - She was awarded a Google Research Award and is currently the ISR co-PI of the Responsible AI project, a 78Million € consortium that aims to make AI fair and trustworthy in a variety of fields, including healthcare. - Catarina has published several journal and conference papers pertaining skin cancer diagnosis, including a recent work on Nature Medicine where she demonstrated the impact of adding human preferences in an automatic diagnostic system. - She is a member of the International Skin Imaging Collaboration AI and Education committees, of the EADV AI task force, and of the ELLIS Lisbon Unit.
