  • Biography

    José C. Machado (JCM) is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, Group Leader at i3S, and a member of the Steering Committees of i3S and IPATIMUP. He studied Biology at the University of Porto and completed his PhD at the Universities of Tübingen, Germany, and Porto, Portugal, in 1999. He is internationally recognized for his work on the role of Helicobacter pylori infection and E-cadherin in gastric cancer. He has served on the scientific committees of UEG (United European Gastroenterology) and ESHG (European Society of Human Genetics). JCM has received numerous awards, including the ECP (European Cancer Prevention Organization) Young Researcher Prize in 2000, the AACR Scholar-in-Training Award for Promising Cancer Research in 2001, the National Gastroenterology Prize in 2005, and the Pfizer Clinical Research Award in 2018. He also served as Director of the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory at IPATIMUP. As of March 2025, JCM has co-authored 207 scientific publications, with a total citation count exceeding 17,000 and an h-index of 52 (Scopus Author ID: 7102792651).
