    José Fonseca Pires

  • Biography

    Holds a degree in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. He pursued further training in management and healthcare management after completing the Executive MBA AESE/IESE. He earned his PhD in Human, Social, and Legal Sciences from the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC-Barcelona). He is Professor and Head of the Human Behavior in Organizations area at AESE. He is Director of PADIS – Advanced Program for the Management of Healthcare Institutions. He also serves as a Coach on AESE’s Executive Coaching team and is a Member of AESE’s Board of Directors. Additionally, he is Associate Partner at DPM Consulting Portugal and a Member of the Research Committee of Fundación DPMC. He was awarded the Best Paper Award at the 4th International Conference on Organization and Management (ICOM 2019), organized by the College of Business of Abu Dhabi University. He is co-author of the book “Sonhando com um hospital optimista” (Dreaming of an Optimistic Hospital), a guide to revitalizing the humanization of care provided in healthcare institutions. He contributed an article to “Reflexões sobre Ética Médica” (Principia, 2019), and co-authored the chapter “Managing people with ethics and compassion” in “Emerging Human and Techno-Human Business Management Dynamics in a Globalized Environment” (Nova Science Publishers, 2020). He is also co-author of the chapter “Being ‘on a Mission’ at Work: How to Make Mission Statements Effective in the Healthcare Sector”, in “Regionalized Management of Medicine” (Springer, 2022). He participated in the study “La cultura empresarial: estudio empírico en empresas españolas y portuguesas” (IESE, 2007), in the study “Impact of working hours on sleep and mental health” (2017), and “Attrition and talent retention” (2024). He is the author of several case studies. During his university years, he served as Director of the Boavista Student Residence in Porto and was a permanent collaborator of the Institute for Solidarity and University Cooperation, an NGO for Development.
